Sunova Solar invests in a cell factory in China

Sunova Solar has achieved another goal on its way to becoming a fully integrated solar producer by investing in a cell production capacity of 9 GW. The plant in Yibin City in the Chinese province of Sichuan will focus on the production of TOPCon cells with diameters of 182 mm, 199 mm and 210 mm.

Yibin City, Sunova Solar is proud to announce that it has invested in its first cell manufacturing facility, which was inaugurated on January 5, 2024 and is currently ramping up production to its final volume of 9 GW of annual cell production. This corresponds to approx. 36,000 highly efficient modules per day.

“The investment in our own cell production line is an important milestone in our long-term strategy. It will reduce our dependence on other suppliers and thus ensure consistent cell quality for our high-efficiency modules. In addition, we can serve our customers with advanced technology that we are continuously developing,” explains Mike Song, Chairman of Sunova Solar, adding: “It also gives us better control over our supply chain to ensure the production of our modules with materials without forced labor.”

Cell production is a state-of-the-art, fully automated facility that enables the manufacture of cells in three main sizes – 182 mm, 199 mm and 210 mm – to suit a wide range of applications. With the 5G-AGV (automated guided vehicle) based transport system consisting of mobile robots, it uses the latest flexible intralogistics automation solutions. In conjunction with the 5th generation mobile network, which is characterized by high performance, high reliability, high speed and low latency, the performance and efficiency of the AGVs used for material handling in Sunova Solar’s new factory will be further improved.

The quality of the cells is ensured by a number of different tests, such as color and appearance sorting, EL tests, electrical IV performance tests and other reliability tests, such as voltage tests, light decay tests and much more.

The plant covers an area of 107,000 square meters, of which 67,000 square meters are used for the cell production workshop. Currently, 560 people work in the factory and 420 workers are employed in the workshop. The cell production is powered by a photovoltaic system on the roof and was designed with a concentrated water recycling system, which underlines Sunova Solar’s efforts to produce solar solutions under environmentally friendly conditions.
